What participants say about the challenge
Questions and Answers
The season of our "Harter Brocken" Hero Challenge has been deliberately scheduled to allow you to experience the fascinating nature of the Harz region in all its glory. The route is open for your ride from March to November, as long as there’s no snow. Each season offers its own unique charm and special highlights.
The exact riding periods are defined in close coordination with forestry and nature conservation authorities to protect the sensitive ecosystem of the Harz. This means the trails are officially accessible as long as conditions allow and no snow is present on the route. Outside of these periods, riding is not permitted.
Important note: Please stay strictly on the marked trails during your tour to protect wildlife and plant life. Night rides within the national park are generally not allowed. In the summer months from June to August you will benefit from the long days with over 13 hours of sunshine - perfect for those aiming for Gold.
Bronze Riders
There are two types of Bronze riders: The first is a beginner looking for a sporty challenge, pushing themselves and testing their limits on the route. The second already has a higher fitness level and sees the challenge more as an opportunity to discover nature and enjoy the adventure without overexerting themselves.
- Training: 2–4 hours/week, focus on basic endurance and technique
- Distance: 40–70 km/week
- Riding days: 1–2 days/week
- Fitness level: A solid base level of fitness (from any sport) is recommended to complete the tour. However, your glutes and legs should be accustomed to the saddle and the bike to effectively handle longer distances and steep climbs.
Silver Riders
Here again, we distinguish between two types: The first seeks a sporting challenge and aims to push themselves physically. The second type, who is already in significantly better shape, uses the tour as an opportunity to enjoy the route at a steady pace while still staying active and engaged with nature.
- Training: 5–8 hours/week, moderate rides with a focus on endurance and climbing
- Distance: 70–120 km/week
- Riding days: 2–4 days/week
- Fitness level: Good fitness is required to complete the full route, with regular recovery breaks necessary.
Gold Riders
For Gold riders, it’s all about performance, pushing personal limits and mastering demanding terrain is the main focus.
- Training: 8–10 hours/week, very intensive rides focused on endurance and climbing strength
- Distance: 150–250 km/week
- Riding days: 4–6 days/week
- Fitness level: A very high level of endurance and strength is required. Riders must be able to handle long distances with steep climbs (over 25%) and technically demanding trails without extended recovery breaks. Intensive training weeks are necessary to complete this tour in one day.

Currently, there's no finisher list available yet. However, be assured that we carefully consider all your feedback and are already working behind the scenes on a range of exciting updates. Yeahh!
Currently, you can pick up your finisher trophy at the HKK Hotel Wernigerode, our first official partner hotel. We therefore recommend starting your challenge here in Wernigerode as well.
But this is only the beginning: over the winter, we’ll be expanding our network step by step and adding more hotels throughout the Harz. This will make your starting point even more flexible and your trophy pickup even more convenient.
