questions and answers
The season of our Hero Challenge "Harter Brocken" is deliberately planned so that you can experience the fascinating nature of the Harz in all its glory. The route is available for your tour from March to November, as long as there’s no snow. Each season offers its own charm and special highlights.
The exact tour times are set in consultation with the forestry and nature conservation authorities in order to protect the sensitive nature of the Harz. Driving on the route is not permitted outside of these times.
An important note : Please stay on the signposted paths during your tour to not disturb the flora and fauna. In general, night rides are not permitted in the national park. In the summer months from June to August you will benefit from the long days with over 13 hours of sunshine - ideal for gold travelers.
bronze rider
There are two types of bronze riders: the first is the beginner who wants to challenge himself physically and push himself to his limits with the tour. The second type has a higher fitness level, but sees the challenge more as an opportunity to discover nature and enjoy the adventure without pushing themselves too much.
Training : 2-4 hours/week, focus on basic endurance and technique
Kilometers/week : 40-70 km
Days/week : 1-2 days
Sportiness : A solid basic level of fitness (of any kind of sport) is recommended to complete the entire tour. However, your glutes and legs should be used to the saddle and the bike in order to be able to handle longer distances and steep climbs.
silver rider
Here we also differentiate between two types: the first is looking for a sports challenge and wants to push themselves physically. The second type, who is already much more fit, uses the tour as an opportunity to enjoy the route in peace and explore nature, while still remaining physically active.
Training : 5-8 hours/week, moderate rides, focus on endurance and climbs
Kilometers/week : 70-120 km
Days/week : 2-4 days
Athleticism : Good fitness is necessary to complete the entire route, with regular rest breaks required.
Goldfahrer/in
For the Gold Riders, it is all about the sports challenge – endurance, testing your own limits and overcoming challenging routes are the main focus.
Training : 8-10 hours/week, very intensive rides, focus on endurance and incline training
Kilometers/week : 150-250 km
Days/week : 4-6 days
Sportiness : A very high level of endurance and strength is required. The rider must be able to manage long distances with steep climbs (over 25%) and technically demanding trails without long recovery phases. Intensive training weeks are necessary to master this tour in one day.

There is currently no finisher list. But be aware that we are trying to take into account all of your good feedback and are already working on lots of cool updates in the background. Yeahh!
You can currently pick up your finisher trophy at the HKK Hotel Wernigerode, our first official partner hotel. That’s why we recommend starting your challenge here in Wernigerode.
But this is just the beginning: over the winter, we’ll be expanding our network step by step and adding more hotels throughout the Harz. This will make your starting point even more flexible and your trophy pickup even more convenient.
